Our PBL projects are moving along smoothly. This week we dedicated our time to filling out our notebooks and brainstorming different designs. Teams researched how certain machines work such as elevators, escalators and Ferris wheels. Using our mechanical knowledge, students began drafting a Plan A and Plan B in their notebooks. Using these plans, students will begin to decide on their best course of action. Can’t wait to see the finalized list of ideas.
This was a big week for our expert writing. We have our research collected and articles outlined. Now students have started to compose their body paragraphs. We started things off by learning about the main idea and topic sentences. From here, students learned we need details to support our topic sentence. As of now, we have a rough draft composed of our three main sections. Next, we will begin peer editing and adding text features to bring our articles to life.
The SBAC is right around the corner. So this week we explored more complicated concepts in area. Specifically, we have been working on the area of irregular shapes and the Distributive Property. Students learned how to count the area of an object that is not a square or rectangle. Likewise, we discussed how we could find the area of objects using the Distributive Property. In addition to this, we have started to review some of our previous math concepts to get ready for the test.
With that said, the SBAC is coming up and there are opportunities for parents who want their students to practice. Below is the website for practice tests. Click the “Take the Practice and Training Test” icon and click “Sign In” on the next page. Select Grade 3 on the third page and pick any of the green tests pages shown.

A quick reminder, if you can start collecting different “construction supplies” at home for the salmon projects it would be super helpful for when we start construction.
