In the week leading up to the auction we had a lot to do for our PBL. Students have been broken into their groups and are learning how to work together. Throughout the week each group has been presented with different scenarios they must solve together. We had groups role play these scenarios to demonstrate issues they may run into. Afterwards, we discussed how a group could solve one problem through a myriad of different ways. All the while, students have been learning the need for concise journaling and reflection. I’m eagerly awaiting the start of construction.
The most industrious period for students was writing. Our expert articles are coming along nicely. We started the week by writing big questions we had about our topic. Using these questions as a guide, students learned how to look for reliable resources. With sources in mind, we had a discussion on plagiarism. We learned how a lot of plagiarism is done unintentionally. Building off of this, we learned how to quote, paraphrase and summarize articles while citing our sources. A lot in one week.
In math we started to learn about area. We began our exploration of area by using grid paper to count square units. Then using different sizes of grid paper, students learned how important units are to the size of a figure. We concluded the week by learning how to calculate area through multiplication. Which reminds me, now is a good time to brush up on multiplication at home.
As the PBL projects begin to be constructed we will need resources: old boxes, string, wire, tubing, etc. If you have any of this lying around, feel free to donate it to the cause. A reminder that volunteers will be needed in the upcoming weeks. Our sign up is here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c44a4a823a0fb6-december1

Most Important Idea
- Expert writing because we're becoming experts on our topics.
Most Important Activity
- D.A.M. Project because we got to work in our groups and learn our jobs.
Most Important Experience
- St. Patricks Day because we got to wear a lot of green... and pinch people.
Three Questions:
1. How do I calculate area?
2. If I change square units from centimeters to inches, what will happen to the area?
3. What is your PBL team name?
