Our post-Halloween world is moving along. Much like the trees outside, our Wisconsin Fast Plants are transforming into something different. The majority of our plants have entered their final stages of life. Some flowers have been replaced with pods while others are beginning to wither away. This was as good a time as any to complete our KWL chart. Many students were happy to realize how many of their questions had been answered.
We continued our work on comprehending nonfiction texts. This week, students decoded article features such as tables, maps and graphs. Reading an article on elephants, students focused on how these features gave them a deeper understanding of what they were reading. Like a driver adhering to a street sign, readers need to stop and think about what tools the author is giving them and why. Pictures below:
This was a big week in math. We began our unit on bar models in Math In Focus. Students learned how bar models can represent numbers. Using these "fat" number lines, students can solve different subtraction or addition problems. More importantly, bar models can help students solve subtraction or addition problems that require multiple steps. We concluded this week in math by using Math Playground's online bar model program. This program allowed students to answer different bar model problems as well as create their own. Definitely a big hit, as it also appeared in our Week in Review. Here is our Week in Review. In my opinion, this is our best one yet. Students really thought deeply about what were the most important parts of their school week Pics below.

That's all for this week

Three Questions:
1. What are triggers and how can we prevent our triggers from putting us in the red zone?
2. Why is it important to read our writing aloud before we publish it?
3. We learned how mistakes are opportunities to learn. What should we do if we make a mistake or if someone else makes a mistake?
