I’m happy to report field day was a roaring success. Before we started we watched the world champs of tug of war on YouTube. After studying their performance, we discussed how we could replicate their routine. Our work payed off. Not only did we go undefeated in tug of war, we had the honor of wearing our own “Bing’s Bison” shirts. A huge thank you to Ben Hanisko for putting together the shirts. Also, thanks to all the parents who had a hand in organizing the field day activities. We had a blast with the face paint, water balloon toss, squirt guns and relay races.
This was another great week for the science of sound. We were ready to make some of our own instruments. Our first instrument was a straw woodwind. Students learned how to duplicate an oboe reed on a straw. Then blowing through it, we made different trumpet sounds. We then modified our straws by adding a second straw. This turned it into a straw trombone. Altogether, this activity helped students see how wind can create vibration. It also reinforced our understanding of pitch and length.
We also spent time designing our own cup guitars. Students poked a hole in a plastic cup and threaded fishing line through the bottom. Students experimented with string tension and length. In doing so, students learned how the tension of a string changes its sound and pitch.
We are now concluding our unit on persuasive speeches. We spent this week organizing our writing and sharing it with a partner. Students have started presenting their writing to the class. It’s interesting how excited everyone is to here what people are arguing for or against.
To conclude our week, we had an honorary class pet. I brought in the guinea pigs Penny and Lucy. Needless to say there was a lot of excitement and intrigue.
Report cards are printed and heading out. Keep your eyes open. We will be cleaning house next week as well.
