Speaking of migration, we had our first field trip to Carkeek Park. Altogether, it was the perfect way to answer our questions on salmon and migration. Students had the opportunity to experience everything they have discussed and pondered. Part of us went on a stream observation while the others participated in a salmon dissection. The stream observation was a great way to see the fish in action as well as reinforce our understanding of salmon spawning. Meanwhile, the salmon dissection was both gross and totally eye opening (no pun intended). Students saw how salmon are designed to swim upstream and persevere on their journey. We caped things off with a game called "Hooks and Ladders". Students competed as migrating salmon facing both natural and man made obstacles. This demonstrated to students the difficulties these fish face in our modern world.
