This was a great week for beginning new projects and sharing new experiences. Our newest PBL art creation, Herbie Hummingbird, is under construction. Herbie is turning into a very handsome bird. Students are using what they have learned in art to create a bird with appropriate texture, color and shading. As always, this is a fun way for students to practice working together. However, this time we have been able to incorporate geometry concepts from math. So students have been able to talk about symmetry, shape and congruence.
On the other hand, we are wrapping up our unit on MLK by writing our own essays. The essays are exploring how Dr. King has impacted our lives and others through his message of peace. I’m proud of everyone’s ability to look through their mentor text and pull from his or her notes. Also, we've been sharing our writing with peer editors to help improve our essays. There is definitely some quality work happening and I’m excited to read trough all of these. This will be a great way to demonstrate how much we have learned about Martin Luther King Jr.
Lastly, illustrator Carson Ellis visited our school. Carson discussed the process behind creating her newest book, Home. Carson read her new book and allowed students some time for questions. The highlight for many was Carson creating a home based on student suggestions. The home she created included both lazer canons and a unicorn. Required features for any new home.
