We did a lot this week within our unit on migration. One of my favorite lessons was testing the classes' internal clock. The entire 3rd Grade had the clocks covered or removed for one day. This left students guessing the time through internal or external clues. This project helped convey how animals keep in tune with their surroundings and the seasons without using a clock or calendar.
Furthermore, we took advantage of the sunny weather and measured the length of our shadows. With these measurements, we will compare shadow lengths near the winter solstice and spring equinox. This should convey to students how the sun changes its position in relationship to the earth. These observations will provide us with a building block for understanding why we have seasons.
This week also marked the start of our science unit on plant growth and development. These scientists are carefully planting their Wisconsin Fast Plants. Not much to look at now, but just wait!
Lastly, it was picture day Thursday. Check out everyone getting ready. Kind of reminds me of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." Picture retakes will be November 6th.
Students will be publishing their first writing assignment soon. If any writing journals come home over the weekend, be sure they make it back Monday!
That's all for this week.
