Spring Break is here! I hope everyone has something fun and relaxing planned. Even with the break on the horizon, it was a great week for projects and experiential learning.
We wrapped up our math unit on area and perimeter by making our very own robots. Every student calculated the dimensions of different shapes using specific perimeters. These shapes composed the body of our robots. We calculated the area of each body part and then compared our different robots. In doing so we saw how the same perimeter can have different dimensions and areas.

In reading we continued to work on making inferences. This week we read several articles on the Titanic. We developed guiding questions about the Titanic and its’ sinking. Using these questions, we made inferences on why it sank and if it could have been prevented. Altogether, this was a great way to prepare for our upcoming SBAC exams.
A lot happened in PBL. Students began to finalize the blueprints for their alternative salmon ladders. To do this, we created inventory lists and a key legend for the blueprints. More importantly, we had a guest speaker on salmon and how they are moved. Mr Cook came in with a salmon and explained what factors must be considered when moving them. He followed with a demonstration on how pumps and water can be used to move fish. This showed students different ways they can move salmon while they are in the water. It was inspiring for all the groups involved. We will use this information to improve our ladders and make them more humane for salmon. The photos and video of the presentation were taken by C.L and A.L. using their iPads.
Remember, testing will begin April 21st. We will be having a little breakfast before the tests begin. Students can stop by anytime after 9:00. Here’s the link for the practice exams: http://wa.portal.airast.org/training-tests/
