First week back. Of course we had to spend some time talking about what we did over break. Likewise, in celebration of the New Year, we created individual resolutions. These resolutions were all aimed at improving ourselves at school. Every student wrote their resolution on construction paper. We rolled the paper into a party hat which can be opened later to see if they meet their resolution. Check out or hat photos below.
This was a big week for rocks and minerals. One highlight was our fossil project. Using materials found on the playground, students created a clay impression that models the process of fossilization. We covered our fossil impressions with plaster and are waiting for them to dry. Can't wait to see what we get.
Also. we celebrated our very own Rock Day. Students had the opportunity to bring in their favorite rock or mineral. Everyone analyzed each other’s rocks and created scientific diagrams of their favorites. During our examination, we listened to the King of Rock, Elvis Presley. Coincidentally, our rock day coincided with what would have been the King’s 80th birthday. I’m sure he would have been proud.
On the topic of examination, we kicked off our poetry unit by analyzing a wide variety of poems. We treated our poetry reading like a trip to the museum. We examined poems as if they were pieces of art. After discussing our findings, students learned how poems have unique characteristics. With this in mind, we created our own biographical poems. I can’t wait to see what they come up with next.
