It was Turkey Week in third grade. We had a lot of turkey themed fun in class as well as our normal array of academic exploration.
Continuing with our foundation from last week, we attempted to solidify our understanding of multiplication. Specifically, we're mastering our 1s, 2s and 5s while improving our 3s and 4s. Check out the photos below of our math groups. Students are practicing their facts as well as creating flash cards.

Along with multiplication, we continued the construction of Monty Monarch. Last week students decided on what array we should use to divide our photo of Monty. Students then picked a piece and began to illustrate their section of the monarch butterfly. Great opportunity to practice working with other people as well as integrating math with our PBL.
On the topic of working together, several students went to Mr Baileys class to sit in and have 5th graders teach them math. We then had our student reps reteach the math they learned to the class.
As mentioned earlier, it was turkey week in third grade. We had several turkey themed activities in honor of our fowl friend. In writing we used turkey organizers to get our out ideas and order our thoughts. We published stories based on turkey twitter accounts or thanksgiving guests. There was an impressive variety of ideas and everyone had a lot of fun.
We also had a nonfiction turkey reading. Student developed questions they had about wild turkeys. After putting up sticky notes with turkey questions, they tried to seek out answers in the reading. They soon found not all their questions could be answered from one article. It was an important lesson in how research is a continual process.
