There was a lot of excitement to be had this week. In addition to celebrating our partnership with Dwankhozi Hope, we went on our first field trip of the year. In preparation for our trip to Carkeek, we inquired about salmon migration from the river to ocean and back. We kicked things off by having students pose questions about the dwindling numbers of Salmon. Specifically, why do Salmon number go down when we do so much to help them? After posting their questions we watched a video of Mr. Liner's dad explaining the plight of the salmon. After the video, we reassessed our questions and focused on six major areas to research.
Our field trip to Carkeek Park was a total blast and the perfect way to answer our big questions. Students got to experience everything they has discussed and pondered. Part of us went on a stream observation while the others participated in a salmon dissection. The stream observation was a great way to see the fish in action as well as reinforce our understanding of salmon spawning. Meanwhile, the salmon dissection was both gross and totally eye opening (no pun intended). Students saw how salmon are designed to swim upstream and persevere on their journey. We caped things off with a game called "Hooks and Ladders". Students competed as migrating salmon facing both natural and man made obstacles. This demonstrated to students the difficulties these fish face in our modern world.
Dwankhozi Week was our other big event. In celebration of our partnership, students participated in different cultural activities relating to Zambia. Activities included drumming, storytelling, printmaking and eating authentic cuisine. We concluded Friday with a assembly commemorating our partnership. Complete with a school wide song.
