There was a lot of excitement this week on account of Valentines Day and Mid-Winter Break. Nevertheless, there was a healthy combination of fun, projects and learning. We started our week with a special guest speaker. Ms. Klope’s dad came in to speak to students about migratory birds. We shared what we know about migration and discussed the challenges animals face on their journey. Mr. Klope also brought in some dead stuff. Specifically, several owls that students were able to study and see how certain birds are built for migration. Check out the photos below.
This week we wrapped up our unit on rocks and minerals. To mark the occasion, students played a game that simulated the rock cycle. Rolling different dice, students moved from station to station and transformed into different rock types. Using this information, we will compose and create our own comic book. This has been a great way to review what we have learned and have some fun.
Our poetry unit is also coming to a close. We learned our last poetry type this week. Students made Concrete/"Shape" poems based on a specific topic. This was a great way to use our skills as poets while integrating art. Be on the look out for our poetry slam. Date and time TBA.
Our Valentines Day celebration provided us with a lot of exciting projects. In preparation for the celebration, we created different bags to store our treasure trove of valentines. For our party, student made bookmarks and enjoyed a bevy of treats. Of course, valentines were exchanged. Probably the most significant activity were our bookmarks. Every student made one or more bookmarks to be donated to Seattle Children's Hospital. As always, a big thank you to all the parents who helped put this together. These things couldn’t happen without your support.
That’s it for this week. I will leave you with a quick video. Here is our class line dancing with Ms. Stone. Enjoy the Mid-Winter break.
